Tamiya 1:20 Ferrari F1-2000

This model has shifted from the mildly detailed to almost an out of the box due to the deadline for the contest. I will continue the detailed model but for now most of the model will be out of the box. Later on I will return to the detail build. Now since this model is now out of the box I decided that I will not be using CF decals. (of course this idea quickly went out the window)

Well for the suspension I wasn't going to use any decals. I also did not want them to be just semi-gloss but this looked like what I was going to do. I then remembered the trick of spraying through a mesh and decided to give this a try. At the same time I was talking with a fellow modeller and discussing this technique. The topic came up of what to use as a base. At the same time the topic of Alclad paints came up and what would happen if I tried one of these paints. So began an experiment with interesting results. The first step was finding the mesh. After running through all my modelling supplies I came up with a very fine mesh which I believe is from either a Tamiya motorcycle kit or armour kit. Personally I thought it was too fine.

The next step was what to use as a base paint. I decided to try three different base colours. They are 1. Testor metalizer Bronze, 2. Testor Metalizer exhaust and 3. Alclad II Prismatic Jade Gold to Green. Now I didn't think the last choice would be any good but it would be a nice experiment.

The model parts were first painted semi-gloss black before the three colours were airbrushed on. Then semi-gloss black was sprayed through the mesh

Here is the part using the Metalizer bronze. It is hard to see and the picture makes it look like very bad orange peel. The results were too light for the suspension pieces but would be nice for Kevlar. It might look better if I sprayed the bronze through the mesh on a semi-gloss surface.

Now this picture is slightly better. In the close-up you can see the pattern. What I like about this mesh size is that you quickly lose the pattern as the part gets as far as 4 inches away which I believe is true for the real thing.

Here is the results using the Alclad paint. The result is too green and again looks like orange peel. At least I know it doesn't work but it is very different.

A second angle where you can see the pattern better but is still to green.

A view further back shows flecks of green.

Here is a suspension piece painted with the Metalizer exhaust colour and the mesh beside it. Even at this distance you cannot see the pattern on the kit part or see the lines in the mesh because it is so fine.

Close up of the suspension part. The angle that the light catches the part will change the ability to see the pattern. Here you can just see the pattern.

Another angle

This better represents the colour of the suspension part. A bit light but the best of the bunch. Gun Metal might be a better choice.

In this super close up you can clearly see the pattern. I am sure happy with the results.
