Final Word

June 25 - It is finished!! Woot! Well as finished as I will be on this model. I officially state that this is the conclusion of this project. I will be building another one with different weathering and lighting but I will not be logging the progress. I need a break and I have to get stuff ready for a local Convention. In the future there maybe more photos of the second model but I have no idea when that will be done. The final tally has been 701 straight days that I have worked on this model. A few days were missed here and there for a convention or vacation but I did something literally every day for almost 2 years. (Hey check the blog if you do not believe me.) I have made quite a few friends along the way. It has been one of those projects where if I knew what was in store for me I would not have started. However if I had not started you would not see the model above and I would not have met a lot of great people.

Introduction

This is a scratch build project of the spaceship SERENITY from the short lived F*O*X TV show, FIREFLY by Joss Whedon. Sales of the DVD box set were so good that Universal decided to make a movie, SERENITY. The size of the ship has been quoted at various lengths but I am using the 205ft long number, which will make this ship a scale of 1/189. Yes it is a bit odd and I would have liked a standard scale but I got the 205ft number after I had started the model so there was no way I was going to start again.

So dimensions of the ship have gone from 195ft to 205ft and now to 269'-3"L 170'W 78-8"H from the latest blueprints put out by a company called QMX. This will make my model the following scales 1:180, 1:189 or 1:249. So I guess pick a number that you like.

I am a big Joss fan but his other series, Buffy and Angel did not have any subject that I could model. This show did have the ship, which was something I could tackle. I didn't get into the verse until after viewing the DVDs as like others I had troubles getting into the series when it originally aired out of order and in roaming time slots. This means this model has sort of had a late start.

My original goal was to try and get a model build for the movie opening. However this ship is proving a lot more complex then I thought and I severely underestimated the time I needed to complete the model.

Although I am trying to work on the model each day I am not be able to update this site every day but I try to update it Monday and Thursdays.

On or around June 23 2007 there was a worldwide effort to show a certain movie on the big screen again in the effort to raise money for Charity. Go to www.cantstoptheserenity.com to see how everyone did. The Toronto Chapter raised over $4500. Go Browncoats.
