So the news is that Flanvention is a go. Yay for those going and a bit sad for those who cancelled.

This is not related to the model but can be interesting to some

My Lumenlab eVo arrived today. This is a budget projector from a DIY site. I have always wanted a large screen plasma or LCD TV but could not afford one. I also did not like the fact that they would eventually wear out. I know things wear out but this seems to have a shorter life then CRT TV sets. My 26 inch TV has lasted at least 10 years so far.

I thought about a projector but the bulbs on those cost quite a bit and do not last long either. Enter the DIY web site for making your own projector. They sell some parts but contains a lot of DIY info. The idea is you take an old LCD 15 inch monitor and strip it apart and use the LCD as the basis for your projector. The bonus is the bulb replacement cost is around $30 and it will last over 6000 hours. A lot of people want to make their own but lack either the skills or the time. I lack the time. So when the web site was announcing that they were going to offer a finished budget unit I jumped at the chance.

The unit costs $500US and I am quite happy with it. I am not expecting it to perform like a professional unit that costs twice as much. Right now I have it projecting a 60 inch wide image on a sheet of styrene until I get a more permanent setup. The room has to be quite dark to get a good image but I do not mind. I am also sure that people will be hacking into it to improve the performance of the thing.

The first movie I saw on my new projector was Serenity.
