So I just found out the Universal is starting to enforce their copywrite with respect to the Serenity stuff. I am not saying they do not have the right to do that. They have been sending out C&Ds out to people selling Serenity related stuff. However they have also been sending out emails demanding compensation for lost revenue. Shocking to say the least.

The summer before the movie came out I helped out with a fantable at a local con. A bunch of us got together to organize this. We paid for the table out of our own pockets. We printed out whatever photos that were released from the movie and some we could find from the show. We put together a little quiz that people could take to win prizes. We purchased a bunch of stuff for prizes. A member made fortune cookies with Firefly sayings. Another hand made little gift boxes. We raised money for a charity the Jewel supports. I made some glass etchings of Adam as his character as prizes for the charity raffle. Adam was at the con and he was kind enough to sign the etchings as a bonus. A member pusjed Universal for swag and they gave us mini posters and key fobs. Talking with other browncoats they also gave us a bunch of swag for raffle prizes. One of those generous browncoats was 11th hour. Out of her own pocket she send these amazing postcards. 11th has done an amazing job promoting the movie and fandom Universal even encouraged this type of behavior which was called gorilla marketing

How does this relate to the first story? Well after all the effort and work she did to promote the fandom she was one of those slapped with a C&D. She of the one who did her own artwork and in the later stages, used nothing that was considered copyright. So as she was doing the best she can to comply with the C&D she gets an email basically demanding she pay Universal almost $9000US in compensation.

To say this has gotten the browncoats upset is an understatement.

Time will tell how this will shake out.
